Modified Palm Up/Palm Down Choke from Mount

Modified Palm Up/Palm Down Choke from Mount

  • Hero is mounted on Opp
  1. Hero R Hand -> Opp R Lapel 4 Fingers In
    • Opp now knows that you are going for a cross choke
  2. Hero L Arm -> inside Opp R Arm; Hero L Hand -> Mat and then Hero transitions L Elbow -> Mat
    • this helps isolate/kill Opp R Arm
    • Hero probably needs to lean slightly -> L to keep from being tossed/swept
  3. Hero L Arm reaches around -> top of Opp Head
    • Hero L Thumb -> Opp L Collar Gi; Hero Grips the collar
  4. Hero Forehead -> mat next to Opp L Head/Neck
    • this stabilizes Hero in position to keep from being swept again
    • this also allows room for elbow to come across Opp face in next step
  5. Hero L Wrist/Forearm -> Opp L face; grind across Opp face
    • Opp will defend this grinding action with R Hand which leads to step 6
    • Hero is driving Opp Head into Hero R Wrist
  6. Hero lets L Forearm slide onto Opp neck and drives Forearm down to the mat to finish choke
  7. Hero drops chest down on top of L Wrist/Forearm to  apply more pressure during Choke.

I found this modification in to the Palm Up/Palm Down Choke in the following video. Keenan Cornelius is excellent at breaking down moves. I have found his  videos extremely effective and useful. Really hoping to hit one of his classes one day.

Side Control > Dope Mount > Full Mount

Option #1; Side Control > Dope Mount > Full Mount

  • Hero is in Standard R Side Control
  • Hero L Arm -> Back of Opp  Neck,
  • Hero R Arm (UH) -> Opp L Armpit; Hero Hand -> Opp L Shoulder
  1. Hero L Arm/Hand comes over top of Opp Head -> Opp L Neck; Hero L Hand (UH) -> Opp L Armpit
  2. Hero R Arm/Hand -> Opp L Hip
  3. Hero reverse scissors backwards; R leg steps backwards; L leg is front
    • Hero is in high ‘Reverse Kesa’
  4. Hero R Hand -> Opp L Knee; Hero pulls Opp L knee R -> Ground
  5. Hero forward steps R Leg -> (OH) Opp L Leg (AST) Hero pivots hips to drop R Hip -> ground
    1. Hero is now in ‘Dope Mount’
    2. Opp is now on R Side
    3. Hero has Opp L Leg trapped
  6. Hero can now come to full mount by stepping/slidding R leg -> Opp L Hip Area and on to the mat on the Opp L side.

Option #2: Side Control > Dope Mount > Full Mount

  • Hero is in Standard R Side Control
  • Hero L Arm -> Back of Opp  Neck,
  • Hero R Arm (UH) -> Opp L Armpit; Hero Hand -> Opp L Shoulder
  1. Hero R Arm (UH -‘underhook’) -> Opp R Leg/Thigh(from outside to inside) and (OH-‘overhook’) Opp Left Leg/Thigh (inside to outside).
    • this position makes it very difficult for the Opp to turn into you.
    • Hero R Hand ends up hooking Opp L Thigh
  2. Hero steps R Leg/Knee -> Opp R Leg; Hero uses body and R Leg to drive Opp on to L side.
    • Opp L Leg is on the bottom and R Leg will be driven into the ground
    • Hero R Leg/shin traps Opp L Leg -> ground
  3. Hero switches knees by bringing L Knee between Opp legs and posting R Leg -> R
    • This position is generally called the ‘dope mount’
  4. Hero ‘crossfaces’ Opp by driving R shoulder to Opp neck/face
    • this flattens Opp out on to back and shoulders
  5. Hero R Knee slides into Opp L Chest/Side
  6. Hero comes to full mount by stepping L leg to Opp R Chest/Side

The Instructor in the following video does a great job of demonstrating Option #2. This video was posted in Youtube by BQuick Jiu Jitsu Europe. At the end of the video you can watch students practicing the transition.
