Step Over Collar Choke from Side Control

  • Hero is in R Standard Side Control
  • Hero L Hand ->back of Opp Head thumb in Gi Collar
  • Hero R Hand ->UH Opp L Arm
  1. Hero R Hand  -> Opp L Hip Gi; Hero R Forarm -> Opp Hips
  2. Hero jumps to R Knee on Belly
    • Hero applies pressure with R Knee to force Opp to roll onto R Side
    • Opp defends with R + L Arm pushing -> Hero R Knee (AST – ‘at same time’) Opp rolls onto R Side
  3. During transition Hero allows R Knee to slide -> Ground (AST) Hero keeps R Arm tightly against Opp Hips
    • This last point is important to control Opp Hips
  4. Hero L Arm slides L a couple of inches to a fairly loose Gi Collar Grip beside Opp R Neck
  5. Hero steps L Foot -> Opp L Neck; when ready + balanced Hero slides L Leg under Opp back of neck.
    • If needed you can windshield wiper your leg under the back of Opp Head
  6. Hero L inner forearm drops  L -> across Opp neck
    • Hero Elbow points -> L + Outside
    • Hero L Arm continues to apply downward pressure to finish the choke.

Below is a really good video published by Ray Coleman from Black dragon Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that demonstrates this technique really well.

Keep in mind that there are other variations. One common variations uses the idea of dropping your head to the ground while pulling with your arm and kicking with your leg backwards to finish the choke.

Side Control > Dope Mount > Full Mount

Option #1; Side Control > Dope Mount > Full Mount

  • Hero is in Standard R Side Control
  • Hero L Arm -> Back of Opp  Neck,
  • Hero R Arm (UH) -> Opp L Armpit; Hero Hand -> Opp L Shoulder
  1. Hero L Arm/Hand comes over top of Opp Head -> Opp L Neck; Hero L Hand (UH) -> Opp L Armpit
  2. Hero R Arm/Hand -> Opp L Hip
  3. Hero reverse scissors backwards; R leg steps backwards; L leg is front
    • Hero is in high ‘Reverse Kesa’
  4. Hero R Hand -> Opp L Knee; Hero pulls Opp L knee R -> Ground
  5. Hero forward steps R Leg -> (OH) Opp L Leg (AST) Hero pivots hips to drop R Hip -> ground
    1. Hero is now in ‘Dope Mount’
    2. Opp is now on R Side
    3. Hero has Opp L Leg trapped
  6. Hero can now come to full mount by stepping/slidding R leg -> Opp L Hip Area and on to the mat on the Opp L side.

Option #2: Side Control > Dope Mount > Full Mount

  • Hero is in Standard R Side Control
  • Hero L Arm -> Back of Opp  Neck,
  • Hero R Arm (UH) -> Opp L Armpit; Hero Hand -> Opp L Shoulder
  1. Hero R Arm (UH -‘underhook’) -> Opp R Leg/Thigh(from outside to inside) and (OH-‘overhook’) Opp Left Leg/Thigh (inside to outside).
    • this position makes it very difficult for the Opp to turn into you.
    • Hero R Hand ends up hooking Opp L Thigh
  2. Hero steps R Leg/Knee -> Opp R Leg; Hero uses body and R Leg to drive Opp on to L side.
    • Opp L Leg is on the bottom and R Leg will be driven into the ground
    • Hero R Leg/shin traps Opp L Leg -> ground
  3. Hero switches knees by bringing L Knee between Opp legs and posting R Leg -> R
    • This position is generally called the ‘dope mount’
  4. Hero ‘crossfaces’ Opp by driving R shoulder to Opp neck/face
    • this flattens Opp out on to back and shoulders
  5. Hero R Knee slides into Opp L Chest/Side
  6. Hero comes to full mount by stepping L leg to Opp R Chest/Side

The Instructor in the following video does a great job of demonstrating Option #2. This video was posted in Youtube by BQuick Jiu Jitsu Europe. At the end of the video you can watch students practicing the transition.

Baseball Bat Choke from Side Control

Baseball Bat Choke from Side Control

  • Hero has Opp in R Side Control
  • Opp has R + L Hand in Home Alone Position
  1. Hero L Hand -> back of Opp L Neck Gi (thumb in)
  2. Hero R Arm swims under Opp L Arm; Hero R Hand -> 1-3 inshes beside Hero L and and ->Opp L Gi Lapel (four fingers in)
  3. Hero jumps up with L Leg posted L;  R knee on ground
    • often the Opp R Arm will defend by pushing on Hero R or L Arm to prevent pressure (not shown in video below)
  4. Hero R Knee slices L -> Opp R Arm to secure it -> ground; Hero may need to adjust L foot slightly L at this point.
  5. Hero bends R wrist to create “V” on outside of hand(this will fit nicely across Opp neck)
  6. Hero turns R -> N/S(Northsouth) (AST) Hero drops R Arm; Hero Head -> Opp R Hip to apply pressure
    • Hero R + L Elbows will touch or almost touch
    • Hero continues to turn to finish choke

This video from SidewinderBJJ does a great job demonstrating the Baseball Bat Choke

Side Control to Far Side Straight Armlock to Armbar

#1)Side Control to Far Side Straight Armlock to Armbar

  • Hero has Opp in R side control
  • Opp L Arm -> Hero R Neck (key detail)
  • Hero R Arm UH(under hook) Opp L arm; Hero L Arm -> back of Opp Neck
  1. Hero Head and R Arm squeeze tight -> Opp L Arm
  2. Hero L Hand comes over the top and -> Opp L Neck/Head; Hero L Hand/Arm pushes Opp Head -> L
  3. Hero stays low and slides R Knee across Opp Chest -> Opp L ribs and ground
  4. Hero L Knee slides over top of Opp Face -> Opp L Neck Area
    • Hero L foot can go -> Opp R Armpit for better stabilization
  5. Hero R + L Hands Gable Grip and Hero L Forearm -> just slightly above the Opp L elbow towards the triceps
  6. Hero tightens up on Opp L Arm with Head and Arms  to finish the Armlock applying pressure to the L Elbow Joint
    • The video below by Carnage BJJ/Jamie Jara shows the finish to this sequence.
    • It has slightly different leg seqeunce as he starts with his L Leg first and he decides to insert his L Leg under the back of the Opp Head. This works very well also and may provide better balance during the transition depending on your Opp.

#2)Failed Far Side Straight Armlock to Armbar

  • At Step #5 above Opp turns L Arm to avoid armlock
  • Opp L Arm bends 90 degrees and Opp L Hand -> Opp L rib/hip area
  1. Hero R Hand -> Opp L Triceps/Elbow
  2. Hero L Arm posts High L
  3. Hero keeps Legs tight and pivots R to come 180 degrees(facing up) into armbar postion
    • hero L + R Legs are bent; Knees tight
    • Hero is on back
  4. Hero finishes Armbar by pulling down on the Opp L Forearm and lifting hips.
